Jeanine Murphy helped guide the homeless shelter in Haverhill, MA. called Emmaus. She visited the site in Canada, The Sanctuary of Saint Marguerite d'Youville, and Jeanine told me that Saint Marguerite, when discovering that the hospital she built was burning in a fire, asked her friends to say a prayer with her: 'Thank you God for the fire, for the practical and spiritual things I will learn from the fire.'
This does not mean that we passively accept pain and suffering, but that we learn from it.
Buddha said that we must not get attached to birth or death. By that, my understanding is that the joy of birth and the suffering of illness and even death is something we feel with grief and our own suffering, but that we can let go of the attachment, over time, of our suffering and live in peace once again.
